5 WILD THINGS ACCOUNTANTS ACCOMPLISHED

1. Al Capone was brought down by accountants.
Big Al ultimately went to jail for tax evasion, owing to the FBI's relentless accountants, after eluding so many other charges.
2. The first words in history were written by an accountant.
Around 5,000 years ago, the oldest surviving sample of written language was discovered. The inscription is in Sumerian cuneiform and reads as follows: "Over the course of 37 months, 29,086 measures of barley were received. Kushim has signed this letter."
3. Accountants contributed to the creation of the Bible.
St. Matthew served as a tax collector before writing the Gospel that bears his name. Another tax collector was Saul, who after his conversion changed his name to Paul and wrote several New Testament books.
4. Bubble gum was created by an accountant.
Walter Diemer, an accountant at the Fleer chewing gum business, spent his free time experimenting with gum formulas. In 1926, he
developed the present bubble gum mixture and was the first to commercialize it. Because that was the only food coloring the factory had, the gum was pink.
5. The yearly Oscar vote is handled by accountants.
Certified public accountants tabulate all Oscar ballots and announce winners for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Accountants, according to the Academy, are well-suited for this job because of their reputation for objectivity and attention to detail.
